One of the most common reasons patients are hesitant to see a chiropractor is that they don’t know what to expect from a typical treatment.
The first chiropractic appointment at HLHC typically consists of a 45-60 minute appointment. Paper work will be filled out followed by a thorough health history. Your chiropractor will ask about your present injury, past medical history, medications, etc.
Once this is completed your chiropractor will then conduct a thorough physical examination, which may include the following: range of motion testing, orthopaedic testing, neurological examination, blood pressure readings, etc.
Your chiropractor will then explain your diagnosis, your treatment plan, prognosis and/or if they recommend further testing via x-rays or your medical doctor.
Typically patients associate chiropractic with the adjustment. And yes, we do use the adjustment to help get the joints moving optimally, however we also use a wide range of other modalities during your treatment. Depending on your condition your chiropractor may use medical acupuncture, active release therapy, mobilizations, electrotherapy, ultrasound, laser, and shockwave therapy and rehabilitation exercises.
Follow up treatments are typically 20 minutes and the length of your treatment plan will depend on your symptoms. Typically acute or new symptoms will resolve quicker, well more chronic issues may take a few more treatments. As your condition starts to improve the frequency of treatments will decrease with the focus shifting to a self-directed home-based exercise program to strengthen your muscles and help prevent re-injury.
