Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, high intensity form of therapy. The process involves applying a mechanical pressure pulse to the injured tissue. Shockwave works by inducing micro trauma to the affected area, leading the body to begin tissue repair and regeneration.
It’s a great modality for a wide range of chronic, stubborn, over-use conditions. It is most commonly used for the following:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)
- Patellar Tendinitis (Jumper’s Knee)
- Achilles Tendinopathy
- Calcific or Non-Calcific Shoulder Tendinopathy
Overall, shockwave therapy can yield exceptional results with minimal side effects. Typically a health care practitioner will recommend a trial of 3-5 treatments (one per week) of shockwave therapy. The beneficial effects can include decreased pain, as well as improved function and mobility.
