Low back pain is the #1 reason for people to visit HLHC! It affects up to 80% of individuals at some point in their lives, which can have a huge effect on an individuals functional abilities, lifestyle, economics and personal lives!
BUT there is good news!
HLHC can help! When treating low back pain, our practitioners typically treat both the low back, as well the hips! A popular question we get asked is WHY?
The short answer is that there are a number of structures that become involved such as fascia, muscles, joints and ligaments that are affected when you experience low back or hip pain. These structures can cross over multiple joints, get tight or weak, and as a result refer pain from the low back into the hips, or vice versa!
A recent randomized controlled study looked at individuals with low back pain and split them into two groups: one group having solely their low back treated, the other having their low back AND hips treated!
Both groups received low back treatments including manual therapy, progressive strengthening exercises, traction, education & discussions on how to improve your overall fitness. The only difference between the groups was that the low back + hip group also received manual therapy and isolated strengthening exercises for their hips.
Interestingly, the group who received BOTH low back and hip therapy demonstrated significantly more improvement in their symptoms. It was also noted that the magnitude of improvement increased throughout treatment – indicating that the benefit of the hip treatment continued to increase over time when compared to the solely low back group.
So, next time your low back is injured, make sure to ask your practitioner about your hips (and vice versa)!
